With the recent launch of data.org’s Inclusive Growth & Recovery Challenge, we’re working hard to design and execute key aspects of the program. As our new Project Manager, Jackson Thomas will take the Challenge to the next level, and we couldn’t be more excited.
Armed with leadership, project management, and volunteer engagement skills from both the nonprofit and the government sectors, Jackson will manage the key activities and relationships in DataKind’s implementation of the Inclusive Growth & Recovery Challenge. He’ll work closely and cross functionally within our extensive network of volunteer experts, and our Operations, Community, and Network teams, as well as with our primary contacts at data.org to hit a number of goals, including volunteer judge selection and management.
Learn more about his background below, and please join us in welcoming Jackson to the DataKind community!
What were you up to before DataKind?
I’ve spent my career working in the social impact space, primarily focused on education, workforce readiness, and criminal justice reform. Before joining DataKind, I was the Senior Manager of International Expansion at Girls Who Code. I led an international team that started 500+ volunteer-led coding programs serving girls across Canada, the United Kingdom, and India. My team partnered with NGOs, government entities, and corporations to deliver country-specific curriculum in English, French, and Hindi. Prior to joining Girls Who Code, I worked on the Academic Policy team at the New York City Department of Education.
Why are you excited to join DataKind?
Throughout my career, I’ve worked with social impact organizations that leverage data, technology, and skilled volunteers to address our most pressing issues. That’s why I’m so inspired and energized by DataKind’s mission to use data and tech for good. I’m so excited to work with DataKind staff, volunteers, and partners to harness the power of data science and AI in service of humanity.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Whenever possible, I love to travel. A few highlights from my travels include scuba diving with sea turtles in the Galapagos Islands, exploring temples in Varanasi, and skiing in Whistler. I also love to cook. Every summer, I grow vegetables on my fire escape in Brooklyn and love to incorporate those fresh ingredients into new recipes.
