At DataKind, we’re fortunate enough to welcome not only one new member of the team this week, but two new members of the team. And with that, we’re excited to introduce you to Asnat Ghebremedhin, DataKind’s Associate, Business Development.
With a background in program management and fundraising, Asnat is currently pursuing a M.S. in Applied Urban Science and Informatics from NYU and has been conducting research on women’s financial inclusion and mobile banking in East Africa. As the Associate, Business Development, she’ll help to steward relationships and secure support from mission-driven project and funding partners. Asnat will assist with all facets of DataKind’s institutional fundraising, including donor cultivation, funder communications, proposal research, and report writing. We couldn’t be happier to have her as she’ll no doubt be an asset in supporting DataKind as it continues to grow.

What were you up to before DataKind?
Before joining DataKind, I served as a program manager organizing fundraisers and mediating client relations with Women At The Well International, an organization aimed at improving the livelihoods of refugees in refugee camps in Northern Ethiopia. Prior to that, I had the opportunity to work in a co-operative business in my hometown of Minneapolis, MN, supporting initiatives to increase accessibility of nourishing foods to culturally and economically diverse local communities.
Why are you excited to join DataKind?
I’m enthusiastic about joining DataKind because fostering collaboration for the good of people is a passion of mine. I’m fascinated and optimistic with the potential data-driven solutions can offer for tackling complex global challenges from quality of education, economic growth, to clean water and sanitation. Being a part of the DataKind team allows me to join my nonprofit experience, data science studies, and passion for development in innovative and meaningful ways.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love supporting and connecting with local businesses, from farmers to restaurants and cultural shops. Also in my free time, I play ukulele, hike, and practice my Tigrinya and Amharic language skills. I enjoy reading – this year I’m going through Dr. Maya Angelou’s selection of works.
